A Biomedical Engineer designs and develops medical devices, equipment, and technologies that improve patient care and healthcare outcomes. Their duties include collaborating with medical professionals to understand clinical needs, conducting research, and applying engineering principles to create innovative healthcare solutions such as prosthetics, diagnostic tools, and imaging systems. Biomedical Engineers also ensure that devices meet regulatory standards and work on improving the efficiency and safety of healthcare technologies. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and a deep understanding of both biology and engineering are essential for success in this role, as Biomedical Engineers bridge the gap between medicine and engineering to enhance patient health and medical practices.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop medical diagnostic and clinical instrumentation, equipment, and procedures, using the principles of engineering and biobehavioral sciences.
  • Conduct research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, on the engineering aspects of the biological systems of humans and animals.
  • Manage teams of engineers by creating schedules, tracking inventory, creating, and using budgets, and overseeing contract obligations and deadlines.
  • Adapt or design computer hardware or software for medical science uses.
  • Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment.
  • Each biomedical engineering or disseminate knowledge about the field through writing or consulting.
  • Develop models or computer simulations of human biobehavioral systems to obtain data for measuring or controlling life processes.
  • Diagnose and interpret bioelectric data, using signal processing techniques.
  • Design and deliver technology to assist people with disabilities.
  • Research new materials to be used for products, such as implanted artificial organs.
