Short Description:

A Configuration Specialist is responsible for managing and maintaining system configurations to ensure optimal performance and functionality of software applications and IT systems. Their duties include analyzing and documenting system specifications, implementing changes, and conducting testing to verify that configurations meet organizational requirements. Configuration Specialists also collaborate with IT teams to troubleshoot issues and provide support for system upgrades and deployments. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of configuration management principles are essential for success in this role, as Configuration Specialists play a key role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of IT operations.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing and implementing configuration management (CM) procedures.
  • Review and recommend improvements to existing CM procedures.
  • Oversee configuration and base lining activities of project items.
  • Work with configuration team in development, upgrades and maintenance of CM database.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity and security in CM database.
  • Schedule regular audits on CM database and assist in implementing audit recommendations.
  • Provide support to management in conducting configuration meetings and maintaining project schedules.
  • Analyze configuration issues and develop appropriate resolutions and action items.
  • Conduct orientations and trainings for new hires.
  • Assign workload and schedules to team members.
  • Evaluate performance of team members and provide feedback for improvements.

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA, Cisco) may also be beneficial.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of software configuration management principles and tools, including version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN) and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet).
  • Experience in Configuration Management: 2-5 years of experience in configuration management, systems administration, or a related IT role, with a proven track record of managing software and hardware configurations.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail for ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to configuration management processes and standards.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to identify configuration issues, assess impacts, and implement effective solutions.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, document processes, and provide training or support.
  • Project Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple configuration projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with ITIL Practices: Understanding of ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) principles and best practices related to configuration management and change management.
